One of the questions I’m supposed to address in the cover letter I’m currently working on, for a job as a literacy and writing teacher for high school students in Richmond, CA, is: “How do socio-cultural issues present in urban communities impact students, families, and schools?” I’m all for brevity, but anyone who works in education in Richmond, or almost anywhere in the Bay Area, should understand that it takes more than a single paragraph to explicate this shit. I’m tempted just to write in the link to this video. I was there for this speech, which was the keynote address at the 2010 Alumni of Color Conference at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. I was brought to tears, as were many people in the packed auditorium. Duncan-Andrade is nothing short of a heroic educator.
